Poitiers and Angouleme

6.5 days / 7 nights

375 € - Special price for early booking. Please book by 29 February 2020. For bookings after this date the price will be 500 €. The price is for photography tuition and mentoring only for 6.5 days.

In 1894 the Paris magazine Le Petit Journal organised what was the world’s first motor racing competition from Paris to Rouen, a distance of 127 km. France went on to not only be one of the world’s major car producers, but also host to many Grand Prix races and perhaps the world’s most famous car race the 24 Hour of Le Mans. Car racing is part of French culture.

The Circuit des Remparts in Angouleme is one of France’s great street circuits, using the city’s ancient roads. First used in 1939 for a Grand Prix, the race is now held for classic and historic cars.

This Experience will take you to Angouleme during the city’s most exciting event of the year. It is a time when the city is full of energy, people, and cars! You will have the opportunity to explore and photograph the city when it is transformed for three days of car racing and related activities. The city centre becomes a car show with displays of classic and unusual cars and members of the public bring various interesting and high performance cars into the city.

This Experience will also allow you to explore and photograph the city of Poitiers as well, which is where the 161 Experiences are based and where you will be staying.

Justin first visited the Circuit des Remparts Angouleme event in 2018 and immediately saw the potential it offered by including it as a Photo Experience. During the week there will be three day-trips to Angouleme to photograph the events, cars and the many people who attend the event. Justin will offer guidance and provide each participant with sessions of one-on-one mentoring, as well as being on hand for advice as you photograph if required. The days spent in Angouleme will be intense shooting sessions working as a group and independently. We will meet at lunch time each of these days to eat together and assess how your photography is going.

The Friday to Sunday day trips to Angouleme will be by train. The journey time is between 65 and 40 minutes depending on the trains used. The train travel is not including in the Experience price. Estimated cost is around 30-45€ per day. Once you have booked your place on the Experience Justin will arrange the train tickets provide participants with information on the prices. If seats are available we will use the high speed TGV train.

Friday marks the start of the event and we will be there as the cars begin to arrive and the perparations are made to the course. This first day will also provide you with an opportunity to get to know the city.

On Saturday the city will be bursting with life as the event gets underway. Cars begin testing the track and a number of car shows will be on display. Saturday is about the people who are as much on show as the cars themselves. And this is a great day to develop your street photography skills.

Sunday is race day and be prepared for craziness and noise as the event reaches its peak of activity. Sunday requires a pass for the day which includes access to the paddocks where the drivers and cars prepare for each race. This is a lively place to experience and photograph. The day pass costs around 30 €.

The other three days will be spent in the city of Poitiers. Here you will be exploring and photographing this fascinating city, and selecting and sequencing your photographs from Angouleme after the weekend of photographing.

Even if you are not a car enthusiast, this Experience is aimed at all kinds of photographers and offers a unique opportunity to improve your photography, explore these two fascinating hilltop cities and experience French culture.
